Gather these before your first session or before you start filing. Most come from your employer, financial institution, or a government agency. Everyone: - Personal info: name, SSN, date of birth, marital status, and the same for any dependents
- Bank routing and account number (a voided check works) for your refund or payment
- Your 2025 tax return as a starting point
Income: W-2s, and any 1099s you received (1099-INT/DIV/B for investments, 1099-NEC or 1099-K for side income, 1099-G, 1099-R, K-1s, etc.) If they apply to you: - Credits (only if you'll claim them): childcare, education (1098-T), adoption, or EV credits
- Adjustments: 1098-E for student loan interest
- Itemizing? Most filers don't — the standard deduction is $15,750 (single) and $31,500 (married filing jointly). If you do itemize: 1098 mortgage interest, property and state/local taxes, charitable donations, medical/dental records
- Taxes already paid: records of estimated payments or a prior-year refund applied to this year
